Just a quick followup, after a breakdown last week I'm back on the road. Thanks
to all who provided troubleshooting tips. It looks like running the tank nearly
dry to reach 15 cents/gallon cheaper gas was indeed false economy. I towed it
home that evening, and got to it last weekend -- but with heavy rains and hail
in the afternoons, today was the first day it returned as my daily driver. No
problem on the drive to work.

There was fuel in the bowl and the float and valve were fine, no problem there.
I blew out the lines while I had it apart. The big problem was likely the
sticking front carb piston, carb cleaner freed it up, and I resisted the urge to
rebuilt the carbs anyway -- as Carl pointed out, at that point I might as well
do a ground-up. <g>

That would have been easy enough in a parking lot, but I'd had no luck getting
the sediment bowl to seal after I emptied it while stranded and I decided to
allow AAA to lug it home for me. Back home, in the driveway under a shady ash, I
had no trouble at all.

My tips: a fuel shutoff is quite handy, a fuel filter would have saved me some
trouble, and I'll try to break down under a nice shade tree in the future. See
you on the road.
