Francois :

It's a bit tough to diagnose from that description, but my guess would be
that either your clutch or your pilot bearing is dragging.

Try this experiment : with the car parked, engine idling, clutch fully
depressed, put the transmission in 2nd gear. Now shift into neutral, wait a
second, then into reverse. If reverse grinds at all, the clutch or pilot
bearing is dragging. Note that the problem, especially if it's a pilot
bearing, may be heat sensitive. Mine drags only when it's hot.

If reverse doesn't grind a little in this test, then I would guess it's a
problem internal to the gearbox, perhaps bad layshaft bearings or thrust
washers.
