When I had CG's head rebuilt two years ago, I asked Pete Clarke (who,
a long time ago, built the engines for the Le Mans Spitfires) to do
the job for me. We discussed this issue of top end seals and Pete was
less than supportive of their use, maintaining all Triumph heads *had*
to have valve stem lubrication. I now have a head using the original
guides but reamed out to house copper-bronze inserts with no top
seals. In Pete's opinion, this was the best route to take overall and
I've certainly had no trouble to date and the 20W/50 straight mineral
oil consumption over 3000 miles has been less than half a pint. This
seems to be rather better than when the cars were new. Draw your own
conclusions!
