Listers,

Lots of sharing tonight.

I want to tell you about a revelation of basic maintenance I had
last week. I have been trying to figure out lately why my car
would not maintain a steady idle. When the car was hot, it
seemed to load up like it was too rich and almost stall. The
carbs were rebuilt with new bushings and shafts... I wondered
whether I needed to find a better SU needle with a leaner profile
at idle.

Well the real problem was my points. I always assumed they were
good for at least 8,000-10,000 miles. I checked because I was
getting a misfire at low RPM while pulling under load. Well...
They were barely opening. The red plastic version that is
available these days does wear a bit quicker than the one I
remember.

I installed the set I was too lazy to install this spring and
presto!!... great smooth performance and steady idle. I also
finally got the timing advance right by using the "turn the
advance wheel until max Idle RPM and back off 100 RPM"

The car is running like dream. When I was out driving... I
thought this is so good it's time for something bad to happen.
So I was very watchful of deer and careful about other cars all
the way home.

Perfection is in the details.
