I think Bob has it right on the nose. I saw these exact systems
on a car I was going to by and the problem was rust particles
from the gas tank clogging a gas filter that someone had
installed in the rubber gas line in front of the mechanical pump.
Blowing the filter out with my mouth got us another 2-3 miles.
Look for fuel restriction problems.
