Hi Tom,

I'd hardly call myself an expert... but here goes...

No one knows the precise # because they were built alongside (as in,
intermingled with) the IRS models and even the commission #'s were
"mixed" together... best guess, approx. 25% of the production of all
TR4A's were solid axle, probably a higher percentage in the early years,
lower in later years as the IRS became more accepted by the dealers and
buyers.

Incidentally, folks I know who own & drive both like the 4A solid axle
set up with the negative camber leaf springs. They tell me it handles a
bit better than the earlier leaf set up, has less "bump steering". Later
4's also had a similar neg. spring set up, I believe.

Sure, but they weren't on the TR4 chassis... solid axle 4A's were on a
modified version of the 4A chassis. Again, no real way of knowing how
many.

A lot! My '62 was titled as a '64. Of course, the only way to find out
an exact number would be to track them all down and compare build dates
with the title... however, remember the TR3/3A/3B had been such a
success there was a lot of dealer concern and reluctance about the TR4
initially.

No, I really doubt it.... except maybe on a "Zest" prototype? There are
a couple listers with c. 200 commission #'s who can check under their
hoods for you ;-)

Kinda like most of the really important questions in life ;-)
