TR6 centre console

Listers,
Being unable to locate a console in good condition, I am planning to repair
and recover one which has a (too) large radio hole cut out. I have a
're-trim kit' (from Rimmer) that consists of stitched leathercloth.
But, should I remove the original foam/plastic covering before sticking on
the new cover?
