The answer to your question is thus:

The GM alternator should be marked either with "1" and "2" - or - it should
be labelled "I" and "S".

"I" is the wire that goes to the "alternator light", whatever it is on your
car. It's also called the "indicator" connection. "S" is the self-starter
or "sense" connection. That should coincide with the bigger of the two
wires that you are probably talking about.

I presume that you also have a bigger wire connected to your alternator via
a lug type connector, and that you are using #10 or #8 wire to go to your
battery (or whatever you attach yours to).

I just wired my race car for all this stuff and then went out and got a
Lucas ACR17 alternator rebuilt, so I had to re-re-wire the car for that. I
still only have three connections at the alternator, and the unit appears
to ground through the case now (that's "yet another" wire on the original
Lucas setup.)
