The TR6 competition prep manual is pretty specific about this... the pipe
should 2.5 in diameter to the back of the car. That info comes from Kas
Kastner who did lots of dyno runs with TR6 motors... I'd say without
question this is the definitive source.
Go with 2.5 inch pipe.
As for muffling, anything you add is going to rob power. Go with the least
restriction that you can.
