Folks,

I advertised for PI stuff in Triumph World and also asked for leads on
A-type O/D boxes. As a result, when visiting the UK on a business trip
last week, I ended up buying an A-type O/D in good condition (I hope) from
(I think) a Mk.I saloon that was just too good to miss (GBP90 - $155) .
Apart from the minor problem of getting it back from the UK (without the
selector housing, I think it'll get under the 75-80lb weight limit for
single item hold baggage ....). That'll have to wait to the next trip in
June: in the meantime, time to prepare!

Has anyone had any experience with fitting a saloon O/D g/box to a TR6?
(mine is a 72 with the early or pre-Stag-type gearbox). Are there any
significant differences in clutch type/splines, throw out bearing,
crankshaft bush?

Also, the gearbox does not look like the A-type in either the TRF cat. or
the Bentley Workshop manual. It has the correct shape for the A-type, but
the solenoid location and mounting is not the same. The solenoid is in the
correct place (RH side of g/box looking aft). I did notice a message from
a few days ago that indicated that the solenoid can be encased - well, this
one certainly is, but is not vertical but inclined to the rear of the g/box
and is housed in a rectangular housing. Don't know if that presents any
further problems ....?

If anyone is interested, the person I bought from seems to have some
complete J-types available - no email, but I'll pass on phone numbers, etc.
(no financial interest, except to say that he proved to be a real Triumph
enthusiast - saloons everywhere - and a very reliable private seller, given
that the negotiations took place 4000 miles apart).
