This is a topic that's dear to my heart. The reason I sold my ground up
resto Tiger was a major failure of a lower fulcrum pin. The sad (and
enraging!!) part is that it was a 3 year old repro part from "reputable "
Sunbeam specialist. I doubt it had 7500 miles use before it failed. Of
course, the vendor no longer sold the fulcrum pins, denied ever having a
problem with them, yada, yada, yada.
Without warning, it sheared into two pieces, droping the car into the road
and smashing the left wheel into the fender. All steering input failed. It
scared me shi*#less! Even scarier was the previous night, my son and I had
gone to a cruise night and returned home after a 70+ mph run down the
interstate. I had nighmares about what could have happend at that speed.
It's one thing to get a crappy gasket that leaks or bad fitting trim, but
some of the swill being forced upon the old car hobby is going to kill
somebody. The orginal "B.S" quality was marginal at best. But, the
willingness of some suppliers to sell stuff that's banged out by a wino
under a bridge in Sri Lanka is stupifying.
I'm seriously considering a late 80's Mustang 5.0 to take care of my
ragtop addiction. Say what you will about modern cars being built by
legislators or lawyers. But in the "post Pinto" era, I'd like to think that
no modern manufacturer would be stupid enough to sell the kind of crap we
have to put up with.
Hey, anybody got a decent '86 or up 5.0 droptop that they'd take a TR6 in
partial trade for?
