That last post on fuel starvation triggered a memory of a similar
experience with my 72 TR6. The culprit turned out to be no fuel tank
venting. The PO had removed part of the emissions stuff and ended up
with an un-vented fuel system. (As in vented to the atmosphere) as I
drove and the fuel pump pumped the gas out of the tank a vacuum was
created in the tank. Eventually the fuel pump could no longer overpower
the vacuum and fuel starvation (sputtering) ensued.

To test if this is indeed what is happening, the next time it sputters,
reach around and pop the fuel filler cap. If you hear a "whoosh" and the
sputtering goes away, you've found the problem. From there you will have
to find out where the venting is blocked. Non emission cars, like my
TR4A had a little hole in the filler cap. Emission systems vary, but may
be through the charcoal canister system to prevent fuel vapors from
entering the atmosphere.

Good luck
Don
