OK fellas... here's a quick morning question. I'd like to be able to do
something before tomorrow AM (PST) on my Triumph TR4. It's the only car I
can take to school, aside from by brother's rusty Camaro (with power
steering pump removed... guess how much fun it is to park!!)

When warming up, the car sputters a bit. No problem, engine is cold. Car
pulls fine when it comes to temperature. However, once fully warmed up, I
get rough running on slightly open throttle (like not firing on all
cylinders), and backfiring during clutch-in-throttle-off shifting (ie,
accellerating)

I have fiddled with the timing and the carbs to not much avail. Usually,
I fiddle with something, take it for a test drive, everything works
great... until the next "lengthy" drive into town (~14 miles), whereby the
sputtering / backfiring / frightened-driver problems return. I've set the
timing by setting it to max advance & retarding by 100 RPM. However, I
may not be at max advance yet, as I ran out of adjustment before the car
reached peak RPM (or did I? Not sure). I will probably take the timing
light out and make sure I'm within a few degrees of TDC. Will a hot
engine report different timing than a cold one? I'll probably only be
able to do stuff to the engine when it's cold... as I don't know how early
I can get up to footle with the TR.

I am running with a TR4A engine, SU H6 (old) carbs, low-compression
distributor (I think), Supreme (91) gas, and I think I've fixed all the
vacuum leaks. Spraying starter fluif / WD-40 / Windex around the carb
throttle shafts doesn't do anything. I haven't checked the mechanical
advances yet (how do I do that, anyway?)

I think, if nobody responds, I will spray WD-40 inside the distributor
tomorrow before leaving... and will also make sure there's no corrosion or
pitting on the dizzy cap.

thanks in advance,
-Malcolm
