Joe, thanks.  That makes sense to me.  The TR3 tops were similar in that they
came off BUT they have snaps in the front instead of the metal strip.  TR4A
and later are mounted to the hood sticks and have a rubber molding which
secures to the top edg of the windscreen. 

 The first Spit I ever saw was the day after I picked up my TR4.  My room mate
and I were stopped at a light in London when a white Spit with two good
looking South African gals stopped next to us.  We had a little chat about the
cars, proceeded a few more stop lights and - the rest is history.  Stayed in
touch with one of them for about three years ('til we both got married - I in
the states and she in S.A.)  Cheers.
