Sorry if I am labouring the point, but if the engine was running OK with
noisy tappets, (adjusted cold and too loose, assuming that noisy means too
loose) and I've now adjusted them hot, to 10 thou., and they're quiet, can
they now be 'too loose'? They must have been very loose with my 'cold'
adjustments. I will have a look and see what they now are, cold. Won't be
able to do that until the weekend though. Thanks for your patience with

The thing I would worry about if the lifters are adjusted too loose is
the valves not opening far enough. That can cause problems almost as
bad as having them too tight.
Anyway, if the thing you are concerned about is the lifter noise, I
don't think that you will ever eliminate it. It's sort of, "the nature
of the beast." But if the noise is excessive, you may want to take the
car to a ship with a dial indicator and have the valve lift measured to
ensure that the cam doesn't have flat lobes. That would be the only
thing that comes into play that you can do much about. (Except maybe a
loose timing chain).

P.S. Your rocedure for running adjustment sounds like the procedure for
adjusting hydraulic lifters. They have to be adjusted running for the
oil to keep them pumped up. That, of course is not necessary with
solids, since they don't change their nature when the engine is off.
