>Tony, Jack Brooks and I went through this whole drill about a year ago.
In
addition to the Jag thermostat which Jack tested, I found that there were
several other skirted thermostats available for various VW and Volvo
models.
I offered at that time to check those thermostats' dimensions against a
Triumph original skirted thermostat for 4cylinder TR engines. But no-one
on
the list had one to loan me for an analysis test. Since I was underwhelmed
with offers I decided that the interest was not there and so let the
project
drop.<

Art, I went to the local (but pretty good) parts place. As I thought they
had NO IDEA that I was talking about when I talked about a skirted
thermostat. I can go to a dealer and try for the skirted types. Do you
have any idea which models of volve or VW used them?

I had them pull ALL the replacements for Volvos (about 6 different types)
None were skirted! The recommended triumph was not skirted, 190 degree and
a fairly small outlet orifice too!

One local LBC mechanic uses a high performance chevy 350 engine thermostat.
It has a large outlet orifice, and enhances flow to the radiater
(therefore less flow thru the bypass). He has had good luck with it even
here in fairly hot Philadelphia. He does NOT block off the bypass pipe in
any way,
