In another message I posted to the list I mentioned my trip back from
Sydney. I was cruising mostly between 2600 - 2800 rpm in o/d top for
nearly 2.5 hrs. I had to slow down because of traffic when going up a
hill. This put me down to around 2000 rpm. When I tried to accelerate
from there the motor bogged down and seemed as though it was going to die.
I changed into 3rd and with more revs and more throttle the LBC picked up
speed. Has anyone come across this before?

Later on the car would happily accelerate from 2000 but this was after my
overall crusing speed had dropped for a while.

This reminded me of a two stroke trail bike I had where, if you cruised at
a steady speed for a while and you tried to accelerate, it would build a
deposit on the spark plug and the motor would die.

John,

Interesting that you should mention it. I've noticed the same
thing with my 71 TR6 in the 1600-1800 range. It clears up at
2000 RPM. My car doesn't exactly bog down but it seams to
backfire as if it were very lean. And it only odes it after
running at speed and warmed up. I have put in a Crane ignition
system, regapped the plugs, and installed new plug wires with
no change. I've been able to aleviate the problem by backing
off on the throttle.

Whilst reading you E-Mail it suddenly occured to me that maybe
the centrifugal advance is a little sticky and in need of some
lubrication. Just a guess. Or maybe colder plugs are called
for. I am running rather lean getting almost 26 MPG (Miles per
US gallon) Any other suggestions?

It would be nice to clear up the problem. The 2.5 litre engine
is wonderfully flexible engine over a wide rev range except when
it does this.

Write if you find out anything. I will do the same.
