Hi Bill,
The white coating on the Herald & Vitesse trims you speak of is a
specialised industrial finish. I don't know how it was originally applied,
but there are "apparently" no companies currently offering this process, at
least not here in the UK.
When Hugh Roberts built his legendary Vitesse, he used a normal vinyl
material with as close a pattern to the original covering as possible.
However, before gluing to the metalwork, he removed the backing fabric with
acid (I don't know what type), leaving just the plastic material, making for
a much thinner material. Hugh told me he spent several hours "working" each
piece into the odd curved shapes of the metalwork.
I have seen some vinyl with a very close pattern to the original finish
at autojumbles here in the UK, but I've not got a suppliers name - maybe
someone else can help?
