John,

IMHO, the head gasket is blown. Retorquing won't help you a bit.

As far as the exhaust manafold/pipe connection goes, I left it connected on
my TR3B. All I did was pull the carbs, undo the bolts holding the manifolds
to the block, and let the exhaust pipe hold both manifolds. Plenty of room
to pull the head.
