Racing Stripe Removal

I have an 80 Spit that I am about to send in for a paint splash.
Unfortunately, it has the factory applied racing stripes down the sides.
These have worn somewhat off in an uneven manner. What would be the best
way of removing them without having to sand them down to the current paint
as I can't guarantee that level of accuracy?
