One little trick I have done on TR 4A's for years is...
I install long bolts around the housing... much longer than I intend to
use in the end... (3 to 4 inch long) In this way... I can start lining
up the trans with the motor from many inches away...
As I work the trans in... I put nuts on these bolts... and tighten them
up... (not too tight...don't try to force the trans in place by putting
heavy torque on these bolts)
The purpose of the long bolts is to line up the trans and by keeping the
nuts on them equally spaced, you can keep the trans square with the
block...
As suggested by others... I rotate the shaft a little to get the gears
meshed...
I repeatedly observe the squareness of the trans to the block... and
correct with the nuts, etc... When it finally slides in... I replace the
long bolts with the correct bolts... and I'm done.
This system has made trans installation a very easy thing for me. Maybe
it could work for some of you.
