Ok folks,
after some informal checking with people and manuals, and scouring
everyone's pages, I have been unable to determine the vintage of a TR6
head that I have and have been forwarded to you knowledgeable beings
of TRivial facts.
Facts:
Head number is #216???, single valve springs, no EGR port or blank.
The block it was delivered with is a late '72 (CC something) but may
not be the same engine. I have compared it with an early head
(#256???) verified by an early intake manifold, the mystery head has
different casting ID marks but earlier number. Compared to a late '76
head (#356???), the mystery head has the obvious lack of an EGR port,
different casting marks and an earlier number. I haven't observed
(nor have I paid any attention) if this magical -B- (or is it -P-) is
stamped in the top surface.
Assumptions:
I assume that the mystery head is earlier than '73 from the lack of a
EGR port/blank. I have made rough comparison measurements from the
outside of both early and late manifolds and cannot tell the
difference between the port spacings. since the other engines are
running, I am loath to disassemble them. I have not measured
thicknesses, but also do not have the chart for thickness vs
year/compression.
Any ideas? I am thinking that it truly is a '72 head (later manifold,
higher compression), but don't know when the transition to dual valve
springs was made, nor do I know how different the port spacing is
between the early and late models. What really throws me off is the
numbering, has anyone documented the numbering sequence for heads as
have been done for blocks???

'73-76 block (with recesses)? Details, people, details!
