If it hasn't had good care taken of it, then the suspension will probably be
rooted, and the engine will need rebuilding. The gearbox and diff last a
long time (at least in th e5-speed), but are expensive to replace. Look for
rust in the wheel wells, dor sills, doors, and the joints between the
fenders and the nose panel (look at them from underneath). 

But what do you want for $500? Surely, if your friend only broke it up and
sold it bit by bit, he'd come out in front. I heard that a guy out here
spent almost $500 on a replacement sunroof alone.
