Martin,
What it means (as far as I can tell) is that your valve timming is off or
the intake valve(s) are sticking open when the pistion is rising (after
sucking in the intake charge).  What your seeing is the charge being pushed
back out.  This is also a condition with a radical cam known as standoff.
In these cases (radical cam) it is usually controlled using a long ram air
tube (and you thought they just looked cool).  If you would have
experienced a backfire, and not just a fuel mix, through the carbs then I
would suspect the ignition system or ignition timing - better check them
valves for proper operation - you said you checked compression?  Possibly a
warped or valve or bad seat?
