The rule of thumb in the paint industry is three different coats of
paint. If it is thicker than that, it will start to crack. The
cracking is caused by the expansion and contraction of the paint due to
the temperature and climate. Depending on where you live, you may be
able to get away with more coats. That is why you don't see very many
candy apple paint jobs in climates that freeze in the winter. the
number of coats is also dependent on how many coats was sprayed per each
respray. The norm is probably about three. So if your car has been
three different colors. You may have about nine layers of paint.
The key to a good strip job is stay away from the cracks and
crevices. Leave yourself two inches. These edges can then be easily
sanded. That keeps the grooves and edges clean.
It is my understanding that aircraft stripper can be used on
aluminum also but you have to treat the bare aluminum also immediately
to that it does not start to corrode. Paint supply store sell chemicals
for this purpose. Do a little checking around and ask the paint
suppliers opinions of there products and what is required. DougB.
