Henry,
It is not particularly difficult.  But depending on what type exhaust system
is on the car, it will likely also have to be removed.  Yes standard tools
(1/2" wrenches if I recall)

However, I am a firm believer in getting all the wheels off the ground,
particularly if the car has not moved in a long time.  You never know how the
axle shaft u-joints and differential are going to react.  Without being able
to hear the noises being made, you won't be able to detect trouble until it
is too late.
