Stu,
not to worry, the mechanical dist. (Mallory) if manufactured that way,
will be set up for maximum advance without the use of a vacuum unit.
You may have to advance the timing more than the factory spec of 4 deg
after for best ecomony/power. The best way is to advance the timing a
couple of deg's at a time from stock untill the engine starts to ping,
or knock under load (say around 2000 rpm, sudden full throttle mash).
Then back off timming a couple of degrees. Your timing will now be
advanced the best for *your* engine. Every engine is a little different
in the amount of advance it can handle. With Vacuum and mechanical
advance systems, the systems are set up to compliment each other, but
wil never exceed the total advance that the engine can handle once
timing has been set to factory specs.
