GT6 bonnet prop problems

My GT6 has been missing its bonnet prop for years.  I just bought the
two part replacement from Vic Brit, and for the life of me, my neighbors
and everyone else I can get in my garage, we cannot attach it so that it
works.  All suggestions appreciated.  And, it is time to update shocks.
Are spax or koni worth the extra money for my club car?
