I'm having a *possible* carburation problem with my 74 TR-6. I have one carb
(the front one) running lean and cannot richen it up. I say lean, because when
I pull the plugs, the front three are as white as can be, the back three are a
nice tan.
I have new needles (4 months old), adjusted full rich ( adjusted full
clockwise on the adjusting screw for the front carb, 1-3/4 turns out for the
rear carb); I have disconnected and plugged all vacuum and crankcase ports on
the front carb to eliminate them as a possible leak source. Temp Comps are
correct. Tried the carb cleaner trick on the throttle shaft to check if they
are leaking. No change. ried switching needles, no change.
The car runs great. No overheating, no pinging, pulls strong, no hesitations.
I just don't like the look of the front plugs (NGK BP6ES btw), especially as we
are getting close to 100F + weather.
I can only think of float level as the culprit. Before pulling the carbs off I
decided to check the float level by making a fuel-level dip stick. I pulled
the air vavle/needle assembly out; I then put a insulated piece of 26 gauge
wire down the needle jet until it rested on the bottom of the carb; pulled it
out and looked at the fuel level indicated on the wire. Both carbs were within
2mm or so of each other. The thing I noticed and thought was unusual, is that
the fuel level only went up to about 3/8" of a inch from the bottom of the
dipstick. This was true for both carbs. I would expect the fuel level to be
much higher, based upon the 1-1/4" depth of the float bowls. Think I need to
adjust them?
