Buying a parts car?

Hey All,

        OK, I might be buying a parts car this weekend.  What is the DMV 
process?  I live in NY.  Do you actually transfer title (I would think 
so).  If I have no intention of getting the car registered (it is in 
boxes), but what does the state require me to do.

        If I don't register it today, but decide in a few years to rebuild it 
with the parts that are left over (as may have happened to some of you 
out there) how do I prove it is mine?
