It sounds to me like you've gotta problem with either your ring-gear or the
bendix on your starter motor.May I suggest you ask Ted Schumacher of TSI
automotive in Pandora,Ohio.contact him on <tedsimx@mail.bright.net> I bought
a tr6 gear reduction starter motor from him recently, and I can say that he
was both helpful and interested, the service was excellent,my starter motor
getting from from Ohio to the workshop here in England in two days! (well
done UPS).If only we could get service here in the UK like that!!
In 1991 I drove my Herald from England to Northern Finland for the Summer
meet of the Triumph Sports Cars Club of Finland,I think it was on the paved
roads of Belgium when my starter motor began to disintegrate,I stopped for a
rest/lunch stop at a small lay-by,(no facilities),just off the German
Autobahn,approaching Dusseldorf,
Finished my lunch, and, you know that feeling you get when walking back to your
car, that something is about to go wrong? Well,I had it! Sat down, turned
key,click & nothing,tried again,nothing.Lifted bonnet(hood),discovered end
cover of motor and armature making a break for freedom! stuck half-way
between engine & chassis, both long bolts missing therefrom. On my own, very
hot summers day,no-one around,no phone etc,you get the picture,better try a
push start, helpful germans noticable by their absence! Ignition
on,hood(top),in up position, got (heavily laden with camping gear etc)car
rolling,(uphill),lent through open window,pushed gear lever,car started,and
proceeded to drive off without me! heading toward Autobahn on autopilot!!!
two or three nano seconds later, after remembering that I had to be in car,in
order to steer it,and to get where I'm going!,ran after car, leapt through
open window and simultaneously pulled on handbrake,(big deal in a
triumph!),and switched off ignition.
Ten yards from autobahn! Pushed car back for a second try, this time with
hood(top)in down position and drivers(RH)door open,this time,leapt INTO
car,and away.
I continued my journey as far as possible, until I had to fill up with gas at
the old East German border, this time got a push start from Bernard
Trevena,Secretary of the U.S.S.R.(Unloved Soviet Socialist Register,of
Britain),who just happened to be in that particular gas station,in a
two-stroke,three-cylinder orange Wartburg!!! I left the poor fellow in a
cloud of burnt oil smoke, due to the too-thin synthetic Mobil 1 engine oil
getting past the vanes of my supercharger, and burning inside the engine! poor
fellow!
Made it all the way to Berlin,by 10.30pm,Great City,if you have a car that
starts when it stops!,difficult to push-start on(more)cobbled
streets, eventually found my friends apartment by midnight,Herald parked half
a mile away,but managed to persuade,(without a common language),a group of
arabs to push Herald the final half -mile,as I was exausted! Oddly, their
father was caretaker of my friends apartment building! Next day, walked across
Berlin,to Rover Dealer, carrying broken starter in my hand,to exchange for a
recon' unit, which I fitted before continuing my journey on to the port of
Rostock,thence to Denmark,Sweden etc,but that's another story!
Regards Leon,(gosh sorry that was so long, list!)
