Bruce:   re the brake drum screws; have you tried a hand-help impact wrench?

Hit it with a hammer and it delivers a high-torque twist to the fastener. 
Just don't slam your hand with the 28-0z. hammer!

I got mine, Lisle brand, from Griots Garage, with a selection of bits.  I
imagine most complete tool lines have them.  It has worked extremely well
for me pulling apart parts cars that have sat out for years.
