Got two questions. The car is a early 74 TR6 with about 110k miles on it.
Been slowly restoring it over the past 4 years of ownership. Just drove it
from Austin TX (altitude about 500 ft) to SantaFe, NM (altitude 7000
ft)---about 1100 miles. Needless to say, I'm having altitude problems (too
rich) up here and started really noticing them in VanHorn TX (altitude
about 4000 ft).
Here's the deal. In Austin, just before I left I got it running just
peachy. Looked great on the Colortune, good carb balance, reved nice,
sounded fine. EGR and vacuum retard are both OK but weren't connected for
the trip (and still aren't). Tuned the car at idle to 10 BTDC, 1200 RPM
(since WITH the retard I expect a drop of about 500 RPM and 14 degrees
retard which gives factory specs of 4 ATDC and 800 RPM at idle). Now that
I'm at this altitude, I can't get the car running right. Needles have been
adjusted as lean as they'll go and the idle mix tweak screws (whatever
they're called) don't help either. Keep in mind that this car ran just
dandy in Austin.
Question 1: What idle RPM/timing settings does everyone use?
Any altitude adjustments?
Question 2: Should I reset the float levels to get the carbs leaner?
Question 3: Could it be something else and not a carb/timing issue at all?
