Don't despair, I find that after having installed the Crane system in my
Spitfire the engine is much more civilized, idles, runs smooth, etc. 
Everything you're trying to accomplish.

The only movement of the pick-up should be due to the timing advance.

Perhaps when you positioned the trigger (pick-up) unit you did not allow
for the advance movement, both mechanical and vacuum.  If you're
triggering when the trailing edge of the rotor contact is contacting the
cap contact, and then the advance comes in, you loose that contact and
your ignition goes bad.

Check your rotor position when you do the static timing setup.  This is
probably your problem.
