Tom,

First question: is it possible to remove the cover without removing the shift
lever?
A) Yes. Just shift into fourth or reverse and slide the cover toward the
rear and it will come right off.

Q) Am I asking for trouble removing the shift lever?
A) Not too much trouble but there is a spring loaded detent with small pieces
which can get lost easily. Since you can remove the cover and the
transmission without removing the lever, do so.

Q) Is there any thing else to look for?
A) Yes, check the clutch throw-out fork. The bolt that secures it to the
shaft has a tendency to break allowing the fork to rotate on the shaft (which
it should not do). Also when your in there be sure to apply some lithium
grease to the tube around the transmission input shaft. This will allow the
throw-out bearing to slide back and forth easily.

Q) Should I get the competition clutch?
A) I wouldn't. But do what you want, it's your car.

Q) How do the back-up lamp wires route to the lamps?
A) There is a sub-harness that runs from the switch on the transmission to
the main harness where connectors allow you to connect to wires that run to
the bacup lamps. This sub-harness was probably lost by the previous owner.
Connectors are available and you can get wire anywhere (and if you want hte
correct colors, that is also available).

Well, good luck and let us know if there is anything else you need to know.
