Hi,

For some time I have been very dissatisfied with the running of
the 1500 (Toledo I believe) engine I had transplanted into my Spit 3.
The mechanic (No, I didn't do it myself) simply transfered the 1.5"
Stromberg carburetter (which ran OK on the 1300) to the other engine,
but the performance and stability left much to be desired. Later I
tried twin 1.25" SUs and though better in some ways it was still not
satisfying. I then went for twin 1.5" SUs (HS4) which is the original
configuration. They are in very short supply here in Denmark (one happy
guy offered me a pair including manifold for 4000 dkk ~ 700 US$),
but I finaly found them at Spitbiz in the UK for 150 US$ including
postage. They are a bit worn but the performance and stability has
been drastically improved, this was definitely the right thing to
do (at least for a european car).

The first time I tried the car out with the new carbs, I hardly dared
to put the accelerator to the floor, so great was the response compared
to what I was used to. (Not that it was that fast, I had just gotten
used to very little).

I'd like to thank those who gave me good advise on my 'quest', it has
been very helpful. Now I can go on to the next item on the long list
of things to fix...

 - Peter

PS: It hasn't been freezing here now for almost 36 hours - time to get
the hardtop off and the hood on - spring is comming 8)

Spitfire Mk3 - all year, every purpose (well almost)
