It was 1992 when I did my tanks but you are probably worrying too much.
Make sure the metal fittings are clean and smooth, put on the rubber
connectors (make sure they are on far enough), tighten the clamps.  No
leaks when I did mine.  Now my fuel pump connections were a pain...
I finally got those fixed with some liquid teflon stuff.
