When I did the 5.0 conversion, I spent a lot of money on a new crate, Tremec,
and all the parts. By the time I was done, I could have bought a built to order
motor of various configurations.
In retrospect, there are usually several 5.0 "take out" motors on Craigs list
for
$500 to $800 in the bay area. I just glanced, and there are 5 on the first
page of
listings. Two look very interesting. I would probably opt for a cheaper motor
and "drive it like I stole it", not worry about builder guarantee (there was
none
when I bought my 5.0 from Ford, but there is now). I could have saved
several thousand dollars buying a used motor. Most of these are running
and the owners are taking them out to put a 331 or 347 in.
Very little invested if something goes wrong.

your mileage may vary (YMMV)
Curtis been there and would do it a little different today.
