Many thanks for all the responses regarding the distributor installation. WIth
everyone's informative and reassuring info, and after confirming with a
1/4inch socket that the intermediate shaft was still engaged with the oil
pump, I finally had the confidence  to do the
bump-the-engine-with-a-remote-starter-switch routine and it dropped right in.
