A number of years ago there was extensive posting regarding brake flare tools
that really work. I searched the List Archives and Tigers United, but did not
find the specific information that I am looking for. What I did gather from
the information I found was:
1. only certain flare tools really work.
2. most found it rather painful to spend $50+ dollars for a tool that will see
little use.
What I was not able to discern was what flare tools (specific model number)
worked well. Two names that came up were Rigid (seems very expensive, about
$150 new) and Snap-On, but no model number was given. Being the penny pincher
that I am I have scanned Ebay looking for something functional and reasonable.
The Rigid are the most expensive, but there is a Snap-On that comparatively is
reasonable in price.
Eliminating the cheap-o tools here is a list of what seem to be somewhat
reasonable flare tools:
KD 2199 (not sure of quality)
Snap-On (BluePoint) TF-5
Rigid 345 (though this is quite expensive)
If anyone could enlighten me on the effectiveness of any of these tools (or
others you recommend) I would appreciate it. My application is a bit
unconventional. I have replaced my stock master cylinder with a Datsun
(Nissian) dual line MC. I used the metric lines to get the near the existing
Tiger lines (next to the generator and under the car next to the trans). I
spent WAY too much time last summer searching for adapters including list
recommendations of Dave Bean and McMasters etc., etc., etc. trying to find an
adapter from Female Double Flare, M10 1.0 - to - Female Standard Thread,
Bubble Flare. So, I'm more than ready to buy the flare tool, put standard
double flare thread fittings on the metric lines, double flare the Tiger lines
and use a standard (and readily available) connector.
Thanks for any help you might provide.
