Frank, if you have not coated them yet, you could always make some tabs, 
to fill in the areas where you cant weld, and just close up this area.  
No one will see, and after coating you are all set.  Leaking will allow 
exhaust under the car when stopped, and if excessive, could be a danger, 
but I doubt you have that condition.
