"dark ambient light" sounds like an oxymoron to me.  Another interesting
question is were the heads of the screws that attach the ring black or 
chrome?  I can't remember, but I guarantee you that the ring was black
when my car came off the boat.  I don't recollect any other pieces of 
chrome in my car being protected by a plasticized coating.  Cosmoline,
yes, but they were on the outside.
