Steve,
The fuel pressure with a stock pump is about 3-5 PSI and is NOT suitable for
high RPM big inch engines. Performance guys like to 6.5-7 lbs. of pressure
solid at ALL RPM. It may be that your current pump is not sufficiently
providing you with enough fuel volume and the bowls run dry. Another thing
is that the float levels may not be high enough Also resulting in the bowls
running dry. Third it could be weak valve springs and 6000 RPM is where they
begin to float and act as a rev limiter. Start by checking fuel pressure at
the carb on a dyno or by running a remote hose to an area where you can have
it observed at speed. If it is fine then look for blocked filters and if
they are fine then try testing the valve spring pressures.
