Steve,

My previous references were to Tower Paint, who has the
original code formulas and will even supply it in a spray
can with a great nozzle for $10.

They can be located at:

922 Oregon St.
P.O. Box 2345
Oshkosh, WI 54903
(920)-236-6520
(800)-779-6520

Oshkosh, by gosh. Now this is enamel, in the spray cans,
and that's what came on your car. The newer polymer
finishes are also available in matched colors. But, you can
buy a spray can, go to PPG store and get a hard finished,
checkerboard card of paper stock and spray one whole one and
a masked half of another. They will scan the color for you,
mix a sample quantity, and spray it on the other half of the
second card. This will give you a good idea of the match,
and whether you really like the color in the original hue.
Adjustments are possible. Be wary of cross reference
guides, even though they may have them in the computer to
match the ORIGINAL ROOTES NUMBERS ON THE TOWER CAN, they
will always annotate the substitution with the words
"darker" or "lighter" or something. They mean it. It also
may look better.

My personal recommendation is to go with the hardened
urethane PPG product, color sand the final coat, and
polish. If you are not using a metallic (and not many
Sunbeam colors are), then I would not use a clear coat. It
will be shiny, but repair is costly and difficult, and the
color sanding could (if they are not extremely careful) go
through the clear. The color sand (as opposed to the
precision surface prep before paint) is meant to remove the
orange peel of the final coat, not the wrinkles in your
metal. If the final coat is clear, then that's the one they
sand.
