tanks for the memories

i am trying to make the smell of gas a memory.
pulled the tanks and took them to a tank guy who checked them for 
leaks-none. (have all my new hoses)
when i got the tanks back they are just bare metal.
do i need to get them powder coated or can i just give them a few coat
of spray paint?
