     Jim,

The two holes at the bottom of the wheel wells are drain holes. They
were originally fitted with a rubber insert that prevented anything
coming in from the outside. Most if not all have long since
deteriorated and the holes are wide open. My car had some rust in
that area so I replaced the sheetmetal and didn't elect to drill
     holes. I now have none.

The hole in the vertical wall in front of the battery could be a
passage for a vent hose that was part of the original battery. I
believe my ground is bolted up to this hole now. Not certain though.

My car is a Mk1a so I won't comment on the configuration of your
jack/jack handle. If I'm not mistaken, Norm's book has a couple
diagrams. Mine was exactly like a MkII around the corner from me.
You might be able to locate the holes by looking underneath the car.
There should be signs of where the old screws passed through the
undercoating. That is of course, if you still have original.

I reattached my clips with stainless machine screws and locking nuts.
Looks nice and I don't have to worry about them rusting out.
Recommend fitting the jack and jack handle in the clips before
     tightening the nuts from below.

     Good luck,

     JC

I can only find one small hole in the trunk where a bracket for the lug
wrench probably goes. I haven't a clue where the brackets for the jack
attach. Meanwhile, I've got 3 large unidentified holes. Two are at the
bottom of the wheel well where the spare tire goes in an Alpine. Any ideas
what these are for besides letting in dirt and water thrown off the rear
end? I know the other one in the floor is for the battery vent. But there
is one more on the vertical back panel just above the battery. Purpose? Any
ideas where to get rubber grommets to fill the holes?
