I have a GM alternator on my MK I. I used a Mk II style aluminum bracket
made by Dale Akuszewski of "Dales All British". It's like the CAT bracket,
only with strengthening webs so it doesn't flex when you try to set the
belt tension. Since the bracket spacing is for the Ford alternator which
is wider than for the GM alternator I went to my classic Mustang supplier
and bought a Ford spacer used on the early Mustangs. It is a 1" dia. piece
of aluminum bar stock with a lenght-wise slot milled in it to fit around
the bracket bolt. I cut the bar stock to length to fill in the space
between the rear bracket mounting horn and the rear of the alternator.
Viola! Too much R&D, but a little work and now a very clean installation
for the alternator. AND, would you believe, the pulleys for the belt are
even in alignment. If anyone's interested I'll pull the Ford P/N for the
spacer (it'll take a while to get back to you, though, as I'll be away from
my desk next week).

Happy charging,
Darrell

P.S. If memory serves (yeah, right), Dale will make brackets to fit the
Ford spec. alternator.
