O.K., Norm: what are the options? Assuming that Rootes knew what
it was doing when they designed the clip-on ring ( c'mon, everybody,
work with me on this), then where is the shortcoming? I don't really
relish the prospect of a modification that shows on the outside (oh,
like shredded paint _isn't_?) what's the "ideal" solution? Anybody try
a screw from the back, sorta like some Sunbeam tail-light lenses?
Mebbe extending the lip on the ring's clip? You may laugh, but one
reason I wasn't pursuing this earlier (d-u-m-b, Larry) was that I
wanted some wire mesh headlight covers as soon as I found a set in
stainless steel; not only a period modification, but would act as a
retainer for the headlight rings (we're talking tight fit, here). Only
I had seen 'em in stainless only once, in an ad for a place in Britain,
and now cannot remember where.
Save me, Norm, from drilling my headlight ring. Just tell me what
else I should do to retain the rings.
BTW, a testimonial for those silly mesh covers: I had a set over the
Cibie Z-beams in my '77 Rabbit when I lost an argument with a late
60's Fury in a snowstorm once. Not too much sheetmetal damage, but
hit the right headlight hard enough to throw the entire bucket assembly
back into the engine compartment. Would you believe it-- the headlight
was unbroken! But that set was chrome, rusted up pretty bad after a
few winter rallies. Still have the Z-beams, though, and hope to install
them in the Garage Queen once I have a good way to protect them (and
can find the wiring diagram for the Marchal relays I also saved).
