I have a 1982, 23' class A motorhome with a 454 motor that was installed
about 10,000 ago. I pull a small sports car (2300 lbs) on a two axle open
trailer. It has never towed well, 2nd gear on hills and barely making 30-35
MPH...driving by the temp gauge. The engine tune got a clean bill of health
from a mechanic that I trust. a friend recently bought a 34' motor home with
the same engine and it tows fine.... sooooo .... I asked the service manager
at a motorhome place.... old racing buddy and also trustworthy.. and he says
that I have the transmission and rearend... The gas crunch of the 70s and 80s
caused the manufacturers to gear them for milage and not towing. I plan to
get the correct transmission from a rebuilder but wonder where to get the
proper rearend and what ratio do I need... Any suggestions.... Gene
(presently building a Lotus Europa for vintage)
