Also you mention that with the battery disconnected WITH the engine running=
, the alternator (or generator) will supply the power to keep everything ru=
nning!

 

That is why racing organizations require that the disconnect switch actuall=
y will kill the engine (wired wrong, the battery will be disconnected but t=
he engine will still run=E2=80=A6 a real safety hazard in a racing accident=
!)

It really doesn't make a lot of difference which one is disconnected, eithe=
r will prevent any danger of a short.  But there is a good reason to do the=
 negative, or at least do it first.  The reason is that if your wrench acci=
dentally hits a part of the body or frame while removing the negative termi=
nal, it is not a problem because they are normally connected to the negativ=
e terminal anyway.  But, if your wrench slips while undoing the positive te=
rminal and hits the body or frame, you are arc welding.  Once the negative =
is disconnected, there is no path for current back to the battery, so the r=
isk is eliminated.
